Oh the clutter! I see clutter here, clutter there. They are just bits and pieces of things accumulated every day. But suddenly, it seems you now have a bundle of mess. Groan. Well, to me it is a mess because the room has become a tiny ‘department store’.
The dresser is filled with all kinds of perfumes, lotions, moisturizers, lipsticks and all the stuff that girls use for their faces and bodies that there is little space left. And in a corner here and there you see paper bags, small and big bags, shoe boxes, slippers, throw pillows, books, magazines, CD’s. The drawers have ribbons, notebooks, pictures, cassette tapes, old mementos. And the cabinets are filled with clothes that are overflowing; only to find out you hardly wear these clothes anymore!
I believe that if you give most people enough space, you can watch things pile up right before their eyes. I am definitely not an exception.
Now here’s the thing. There are days the clutter really gets to me. It irks me so much that I want to just throw everything away.
“I want my space back,” my mind would scream.
“Why don’t you clean up?” I would yell back.
So with a “yeah, yeah” I finally rolled my eyes and my sleeves and got to work.
I opened my drawer and started sorting through the things. Discard. Keep. Discard. Keep. After an hour, I stopped. The garbage bag was one-fourth full while the drawers that I was tidying up were already clean. Hurrah.
But it suddenly hit me. I was actually keeping more than discarding. In fact, to my horror, I was just actually transferring the things (labeled ‘to keep’) to another cabinet. It dawned on me I really didn’t have the heart to give up my things. Double groan.
This won’t work. If I don’t decide to really give up the things I have no use for, cleaning will take me forever.
“Noooo!” my mind screamed loudly. “I want my space back.”
“Wait, I need to think.” This time I didn’t holler back. I settled down and became quiet.
“Do I really want to clean up the mess?”
“Yes.” I was determined. I no longer wanted the clutter and the mess. I wanted a clean and beautiful room. So I had to find another strategy.
Aha! First, I got three boxes and labeled them: Throw, Give and Sell. Second, I had to be clear about my intention. I said aloud so all of me could hear. “I am ready to get rid of all the mess that I have in my room. I am ready to be clean.”
With a more determined attitude this time, I swallowed whatever was keeping me from letting go of the things that I needed to let go of. It took me a week to finish the task but finally– mission accomplished!
As I surveyed my room, I felt really good. It was spotless…pristine…spick and span. Yeah.
How about you? Are you ready to do some cleaning up?

When I relocated from the East Coast to the West Coast to be with my soulmate, I let go of everything I had, my furniture, clothes, odds and ends by giving it away, this was accumulations of over 2 decades. Made some people very happy. The only thing I took with me were my clothes, all my books and a few paintings. Now I find that I have started to accumulate stuff and I have been living here for only 4 years! I need to let go of clothes, its ridiculous to have outdated, wool clothes in a warmer climate. LOL!
Will be doing some cleaning and also decorating, have to make the bedroom prettier, and give more space to my over cluttered closet.
As usual thanks for the reminder!
Hahaha you are so right, sometimes I find it ridiculous that I still find myself having stuff that I don’t need. I have decided to live simply and yet I am still amazed at how clutter piles up often. So I have to clean up again. LOL Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.
I’ll probably be a slob for the remainder of my life. The funny thing is, the moment I start organizing my stuff, that’s when I cannot find the things I need. I know it probably stems from living alone for a long time, with no one to nag me about my clutters. And, I know that my lifestyle does not suit everybody. But, it’s freedom and I am enjoying every bit of it. My housekeeper, however, is pissed and charges me twice to clean up my mess. Well …. who says freedom does not have a price!
Really? She charges you double? Nasty! Hahahaha Well, you are right, freedom has a price huh? Rick, you don’t sound like a “slob” so maybe there is hope for you.
I do clutter up things every now and then. Yesterday, I just cleaned up two drawers/cabinet and it felt pretty good. Hmmm let’s see how long before I mess up again.
