Loving Abundance is an advocate of health & wellness most especially holistic wellness. Holistic health places importance on the whole, complete, sum total of all the parts that contributes to a person’s wellness. It comprises the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and financial aspects. The holistic approach to one’s natural health and well-being is a wise one. This is in recognition that each aspect can affect your whole being.
Wellness or being in optimum health starts with you, your choice in choosing to live a quality life. Here are tips to guide you on your journey to health & wellness. Wellness is Loving the Self
- Schedule a Me-Time – This is finding a quiet and personal time. You need this for rejuvenation, reflection and self-care. Use this time to nourish, pamper yourself. When you can find your inner balance, you are able to go into the world feeling refreshed and inspired; able to work and serve more.
- Do the Things You Enjoy Doing – Nurture yourself by doing the things you love to do the most –reading books, listening to music, decorating the house, gardening, singing, experimenting with make-up, your hair or wardrobe, designing, cooking, car racing, swimming, painting – do anything that relaxes you! The more you do the things that make you feel good, the more you feel good.
- Get Enough Sleep – Lack of sleep makes you feel drowsy, lethargic and work with less concentration and focus the next day. Sleep is very important for the health of all the systems of your body. Did you know that our nervous system needs sleep to work properly? Or that during sleep, growth hormones are released in children? Or that the parts of the brain that control emotions are resting? Don’t skip sleep. The more obvious benefit of sleep is waking up feeling refreshed and rested; and a cheerful disposition can greet a new day.
- Keep Your Feet Moving – Exercise, exercise, exercise. We all know the benefits of exercising. But if you say you never have time, we tell you—you are never too busy to keep moving. Get up from the couch and just start moving. Any physical activity that gets your feet moving already falls under the category of exercise. Gardening, sweeping the floor, mopping, walking up and down the stairs, walking the dog—these are wonderful ways to be active.
- Mindful Eating – Review your eating habits. Are you skipping meals in the name of diet? Are you eating lots of fruits and vegetables? Are you drinking lots of water? Do you overeat? Mindful eating is not just being conscious of eating healthy food. It is also about eating in an attentive manner and eating with an awareness that makes you feel well.
Wellness is Balancing Work and Your Personal Life
- Leave Work in the Workplace – The boundary between work and home has become nil with the rise of technology. Sometimes we do need to make a conscious effort to separate work time from personal time. Allow yourself to enjoy simple moments doing ordinary things like laundry, reading your mail or drinking coffee or eating a hearty meal without being disturbed. This creates space for wellness to overflow and makes you more productive at work.
- Say “No” When You Have To – If you are loaded at work, it’s okay to say no to requests made by colleagues to do some more work or projects. Learn to prioritize and do not do things just because you feel guilty. This can lead to resentment eventually. Create a space in your life for moments that bring joy and so say “no” when you have to.
- Relaxing Day Off – Are you having trouble relaxing? When it is your day off make sure you don’t engage in work. Use your day off to do the thing that relaxes you. We can’t say it enough; the time you relax is an investment. If you are feeling good, your work life will improve too.
- Don’t Fuss Over the Small stuff like Cleaning the House – Okay there is wisdom in making sure your house is in order. Clutter can mess up your health too. But being overly fussy about the mess in an obsessive-compulsive behavior is no longer healthy. It can eat up your joy and make you feel frustrated. Let go! An unmade bed once in awhile will not kill you.
- Throw the Guilt – Working parents often feel guilty for having jobs that take them away from home. Fight the guilt. It is okay to work and have a career. Remember you do not have to choose one over the other. Just remember to set your priorities and set boundaries, this way you can balance your work and personal life.
Wellness is Nurturing Your Relationships
- Bonding with the Family – Having a scheduled family time is a wonderful idea. Parents and children can use this time to bond and have fun. Don’t make family time into a lecture time. Use family time to create good memories for the family to treasure. Some activities that families can do include: watching tv or movies together, playing games, swimming, travel, going to church, eating out or dining in, playing board games, singing. Find hobbies that everyone likes to do.
- One on One Bonding – Okay so there are moments that you need to do things one on one just you and me time. Mother and daughter can have a heart to heart talk or go shopping or have a hair do make over together. Father and son can go to a ballgame or watch a movie or eat out by themselves. Any parent –child or sibling to sibling one on one time can foster closeness which greatly improves your emotional well-being.
- Time for Friends - We also need time for our friends. Mothers or fathers need to be with their friends too – time with your old school buddies or game buddies or health buffs –whatever group you belong to. Friendship is a wonderful avenue to have fun, expand your world and laugh over your silly escapades or do stuff that you enjoy doing the most.
Health & Wellness is about the personal choices you make on a moment to moment basis. This guide is just the start to achieving holistic wellness. Take it one at a time. Remember each little step to wellness made daily can go a long way.
